  1. Introduction

 

      The Insurance department was established by Dewan    Sri K. Sheshadri Iyer in 1891.  Life insurance was started with the intention of providing insurance security to government employees till they attain the age of 55 years and financial security to their dependents in the event of death while in service.

 

     The Directorate is located in Bangalore, while the district Insurance Offices are functioning in all the districts.  The department is headed by the Director and there are 4 Deputy Directors and 39 District Insurance Officers/Asst Directors to control and supervise various function of the department.

 

  1. Departmental Vision

 

     “Insurance security for the government employees till the age of 55 years and protection to their dependents in the event of  untimely death while in service.” 

 

3. Mission

 

·                 Compulsory Life Insurance to eligible Government employees

·                 Sanction of loans to policy holders

·                 Timely settlement of claims.

 

 

 

  1. Functions

 

     The functions of the department have been classified into 4 branches as here under:

(a)               Official Branch

·         Compulsory Life Insurance to State Government employees.

·         Sanction of loans.

·         Settlement of maturity, death, surrender value claims.

(b)               Motor Branch

·         Insurance for all government vehicles

·         Insurance for all vehicles in which the government have financial interest.

·         Renewal of insurance

·         Settlement of accident claims.

(c)                Family Benefit Fund Branch

*      Supervision, sanction and settlement of family benefit claims in respect of employees of Boards, Corporations, (Government Undertakings) Aided institutions, Municipalities.

 

(d)               Group Insurance Scheme

 

·         Compulsory Scheme  for all State Govt. Employees w.e.f. 1-1-1982

·         It is wholly contributory and self financing.

·         Employees are categorized in four groups. 

A-(4units), B-(3units), C-(2 units), D-(1 unit).

·         Monthly contributions are collected in multiples of Rs.60/- (One unit) & 1/3rd of it goes to Insurance component & 2/3rd goes to savings component.

 

 

  1. Citizen Charter

 

 

·                 Quick and prompt service to the policyholders.

·                 Biennial bonus on the policies

·                 Enquiry counters/redressal of grievances

·                 Issue of annual account slips

·                 Computerisation of office work

·                 Modernisation of office for providing service to policy holders.

·                 Customer-care(here policy holders) activities on second Friday of every month between 3.00 p.m. and 5.00 p.m.

 

 

 

 

  1. Participation of Policy holders

 

 

          There are no services available for the public.  Only the government servants are being insured with this department.  Government servants are the stakeholders.  It is important for the insured to inform the concerned Insurance office regarding their transfers, deputation and other changes affecting their service, thus participating in the endeavour of the department in providing insurance service.

*** As per rule (8) of Karnataka Govt. Servants (Compulsory Life Insurance) Rules 1958, the amount of minimum premium is fixed.  However the   

      Govt. servants can insure for more premium than the minimum fixed, if desired.
